Currently, there are several thousand complex-resistant varieties of table grapes bred in viticulture and winemaking institutes around the world. The Vostorg variety was bred in Russia as a complex interspecific hybrid. The best varieties and interspecific hybrids known at that time were used in its breeding. From the Nimrang and Galan varieties, it inherited large-fruitedness and good taste qualities, which are at the level of the best European varieties. From the Sejanec Malengra and Malengr rannyj cultivars, it inherited earliness, and from various forms of the Amur grapevine, without which viticulture in the north makes no sense - frost resistance.
First generation hybrids
The first result of crossing frost-resistant varieties of the Euro-Asian type such as Nimrang, Taifi Rozovyj, Katta-Kurgan with Amur grapes was the first generation Euro-Amur hybrids Severnyj, Zarya Severa, Stepnoj and Michurinets. However, the berries of these varieties were still relatively small, dark in color, but they could withstand frosts of more than -30°C, and this was the first step towards success.
Second generation hybrids
The second step was crossing these varieties with the European large-fruited varieties. Second generation hybrids emerged, in which the genetic features and properties have already been divided. Varieties with different shape and color of the berries and with frost resistance -25 to -27 ° C, such as Fioletovyj rannij, Saperavi Severnyj, Stepnjak and others, which are still used as wine varieties. An elite group of table grape varieties such as Schasla severnaya, Ijuľskij, Dekorativnyj, Oktyabrskij and Dolores with a berry weight of 3-4 grams and a grape weight of 300 to 500 grams were produced together with these wine varieties. These varieties have been promising for the future. It was a real opportunity to get table grapes with even larger grapes and berries and at the same time highly resistant to frost.
Third generation hybrids
The subsequent crossing of Euro-Amur hybrids of the second generation among themselves brought even greater success. Two promising varieties of the third generation were obtained: 2-5-92-7-2 (Zarya severa x Dolores) and Russkij rannij (Shasla severnaja x Michurinets).
The birth of Vostorg in the fourth generation of hybrids
The direct parents of Vostorg were the hybrid with the numerical designation 2-5-92-7-2 (its parents are Zarya severa x Dolores) and Russkij ranniy (its parents are Shasla severnaya x Michurinets). By combining the genotypes of these two hybrid forms, hybrids of the fourth generation were obtained. With a berry weight of more than 5 grams, they became the elite among table Euro-Amur hybrids. These were the varieties Agat Donskoj, Vostorg chernyj and, of course, the Vostorg variety, which are now familiar to us. These new varieties quickly gained immense popularity both among professional winegrowers and home gardeners. Vostorg deserves special recognition among these varieties for its earliness, resistance to diseases and frost, and ability to maintain high taste and marketable qualities of the crop for a long time. The clusters can hang on the vine until late autumn.
Every success is preceded by setting a grandiose goal. In our case, this goal was set by Professor J.I. Potapenko and his students I.A. Kostrikin and A.S. Skripnikova. In any case, the idea of breeding a large-fruited variety with sufficient frost resistance, using the Amur grape as a donor of the necessary genes, seemed very bold at that time. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to go a long way from the wild Amur grape with a berry weight of 1 gram to the resulting berry weight of 20 grams, while maintaining frost resistance at the level of -25 to -27°C.
As a high-quality variety, Vostorg has been repeatedly used in next breedeng, resulting in next-generation hybrids after crossing Vostorg with another parental variety.
The first generation hybrids after crossing Vostorg include: Alexa, Viktoria, Vostorg Ovalnyj, Talizman, Vostorg Krasnyj, Elegant Sverchrannyj.
The second generation hybrids after crossing Vostorg include: Novoye Stoletie, Kishmish Zaporozhskyj, Feja, Jubilee Khersonskovo Dachnika.
The third generation hybrids after crossing Vostorg include: Demetra, Denal, Donara, Novyj Podarok Zaporozhye.
