Ján Matis-Mathiász

Ján Mathiász-Matis (1838-1921) was the founder of grapevine breeding in Hungary and also contributed to the development of world viticulture. He bred around 3,500 grapevine varieties, of which he selected, evaluated and recommended 180 for practice. To this day, 67 of his varieties are grown, 12 of them in the world.
