It originated as a bud (somatic) mutation from the original "Frontenac" variety, from which it differs in the amber color of its juice. It exhibits the same characteristics as "Frontenac", and requires the same growing practices. It is highly resistant to fungal diseases and frost. It is practically immune to powdery mildew. In Minnesota, "Frontenac" and "Frontenac Gris" ripen in mid-October. "Frontenac Gris" produces wines with aromas of peach and apricot, with notes of citrus and tropical fruit. Brilliant fruit acidity creates a lively, refreshing wine. The unique and complex aroma completes the complexity of dessert or ice wines from the "Frontenac Gris" variety.
